Protecting and Preserving Our Environment Essay At WD, we recognize the need to preserve and protect the earth’s vital natural resources. We believe that part of being a good corporate citizen and a good neighbor is maintaining or improving the cleanliness of the air, water and land of the locations in which we operate. As a result, our facilities throughout the world comply with applicable environmental laws and regulations, and each has developed and implemented a comprehensive set of practices designed to ensure continued compliance. In addition, we continually review our operations and processes to identify opportunities which allow us to reduce or recycle byproducts generated by our activities. We are also concerned about protecting the natural resources of the communities in which our products are sold and used. We review the content of the products we manufacture and have established programs to eliminate or phase out the use of certain materials restricted by international legislation. We have also begun offering for sale a line of products specifically designed to reduce the environmental impact resulting from their use. All of our manufacturing facilities in Asia have environmental management systems in place which are ISO 14001 certified. Each facility has a comprehensive policy and set of supporting procedures addressing environmental permits, pollution prevention, hazardous substances, wastewater and solid wastes, airborne emissions and product content. Our policies express a commitment to continued improvement, and to this end, we review the status of our environmental management systems at least annually. All of our manufacturing facilities have environmental specialists onsite, and we provide training programs on environmental practices for employees whose job duties impact our environmental management systems. In addition, all of our facilities provide clear written direction to all employees and workers in languages appropriate to each site regarding requirements and responsibilities for environmental practices in accordance with company policy. Compliance with RoHS and WEEE Directives WD products manufactured and sold worldwide after August 1, 2005, meet or exceed Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) compliance requirements as mandated by the European Union for electrical and electronic products. The RoHS Directive 2002/95/EC of the European Parliament, which was effective in the EU beginning July 1, 2006, aims to protect human health and the environment by restricting the use of certain hazardous substances in new equipment, and consists of restrictions on lead, mercury, cadmium, and other substances. The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) directive was developed to minimize the disposal of electrical and electronic equipment into landfills. WD hard drive products and packaging include the WEEE symbol in support of this directive. Supplier Compliance WD has conducted and continues to conduct very extensive tests regarding use of environmental compliant material on all our components. WD requires all component suppliers meet WD’s environmental Specification, titled â€Å"WD’s Environmental Guidelines for Materials, Components and Products.† This 20-page Specification sets forth the maximum threshold limits for restricted, prohibited and managed substances and requires suppliers to adhere to all applicable laws. In addition, the Specification states that all WD suppliers and sub-suppliers will be expected to complete environmental declaration forms for all new materials and components based on a combination of knowledge of their incoming raw materials, process review and their own analytical testing and certification data. Suppliers are required to maintain documented records, made available to Western Digital, indicating which measures are used to ensure compliance to the Specification. We review all suppliers ’ Declarations of compliance with WDs environmental Specification during the launch of every new hard drive program and also track this together with a 3rd party Analytical lab data by component in our Environmental Compliance database. In addition, we maintain strict requirements with respect to Supplier Process/Material Change requests. Suppliers are also required to keep records of their in process tests to ensure compliance to the approved Process Management Plan and approved materials. These are regularly audited by WD. Greenhouse Gas Emissions Global climate change, caused by increasing concentrations of atmospheric carbon dioxide, is one of the most significant concerns facing our world today. As a corporate citizen, WD is particularly sensitive to the effects of global climate change. The need to understand the science of climate change and to formulate appropriate policy to address scientific findings is intensifying with each passing day. QA for Environmental and Hazardous Materials Environmental QDoes Western Digital have management representatives responsible for assuring compliance with respect to environmental laws, regulations and codes? Western Digital has management representatives at all critical sites whose core responsibility is monitoring, communicating and training employees in all aspects of environmental compliance as related to the specific facility. QDo Western Digital’s facilities receive periodic audits of environmental practices in order to assess conformance with regulatory and other requirements? AYes. Western Digital conducts both internal and external audits to evaluate its compliance with applicable environmental laws and regulations. Classifications of hazardous materials include flammables, combustibles, corrosives and toxic gases. QHow does Western Digital store chemicals at its facilities? AWestern Digital stores all hazardous materials in compliance with applicable laws and regulations. Storage areas are secured and covered containing various types of containers including bottles, cylinders, drums and other approved vessels with the appropriate type of labeling and containment as required or recommended by codes, regulations and other authorities. QDoes Western Digital generate wastes that are classified as hazardous wastes? AYes. Western Digital generates various types and quantities of hazardous wastes. All wastes are disposed of in compliance with applicable law, and we regularly audit our hazardous waste haulers and their facilities. These include monitoring, characterization, treatment, conversion and disposition. The German military machine had already conquered Poland, Denmark, and Norway. However, not content with northern and eastern expansion, Adolf Hitler wanted to control the western countries in Europe. Hitler had long been obsessed with attacking and controlling France. After their defeat in World War I, the German people, government, and military were humiliated by the enormous post war sanctions leveraged against them from the Treaty of Versailles. Hitler wanted to defeat and humiliate the French people in the same way that his country had to experience. For him, revenge was necessary. The German plan was to swing into France using a new tactic know as Blitzkrieg or â€Å"Lightning War†. Blitzkrieg used speed and surprise along with highly concentrated tank corps, supported by mechanized infantry and airplanes. Warfare was in a state of transition. Older commanders and generals in the French and British militaries were very cavalry and infantry focused. These commanders believed that cavalry, infantry, and artillery would assure victory in any circumstance, against any foe. They clung to the static tactics of the bygone World War I era. World War I had been fought primarily on French soil, and the military as well as the government never wanted that to happen again, therefore they wanted to reinforce their main border against any future German. Little did they know that only twenty two years later they would be bested by German forces in a way that would shock the world. This research will be analyzing many important assumptions, oversights,... ... many French commanders not even knowing where their own subordinate units were located.11 The French placed their defense in old, outdated tactics of static warfare. Gone were the days of two sides slugging it out against prepared reinforced defense structures. Closely integrating concentrated armor, infantry, and closely supported by aviation assets all combined to crush France in a matter of only six weeks. Charlotte Doyle Character Analysis

The most characters that depict great change are Charlotte, our protagonist, Captain Jaggier, our antagonist, and former Second mate, Ketch. Through this tumultuous voyage, Charlotte metamorphoses Into a lady of great beauty, Captain Jaggier deteriorates, and Ketch's duplicitous nature arises. Metamorphosis and change of oneself occurs when one recognizes the first step which Is awareness, and the second which Is acceptance. From an egg to a butterfly, Charlotte Doyle truly transforms and metamorphoses Into a beautiful human being that fights for justice and equality in a time where slavery, classicism, and racism revealed.Charlotte life changes through several choices and actions she takes. Firstly, Charlotte witnesses a horrifying panorama of Captain Jaggier thrashing and lashing her beloved friend Zachary, thus she finds out the true nature of Captain Jaggier. † When he saw they were bloody he swore a savage oath, jumped forward, and tore the whip from my hand, whirled about and began beating Zachary with such fury as I had never seen,† (pig 70). This changes her life because she admired Captain Jaggier and saw him as a â€Å"father† figure.Her whole impression of Captain gagger metamorphoses completely also because he chose Zachary, her beloved friend, to lash and cause extreme anguish to. She also learns to be more aware and less naive. Secondly, Charlotte unexpectedly chooses to become a member of the crew thus climbs the mainmast; this changes her life completely. â€Å"Recollecting Awning's advice, I shifted my eyes and focused them on the ropes before me. Then, reaching as high as I could into one of the middle shrouds, and grabbing a ratline, I began to climb,† (pig 84). Charlotte became a member of the crew by climbing the mainmast.Without Charlotte realizing, he was able to make her a spy for him. Also, he befriended Charlotte in order to prevent his death, and in order to stop the crew from signing the round robin. Secondl y, Captain Jaggier chooses to whip Zachary and this causes him deterioration where his life changed drastically. † When he saw they were bloody he swore a savage oath, Jumped forward, and tore the whip from my hand, whirled about and began beating Zachary with such fury as I had never seen,† (pig 70). When the beast emerged, Captain Jaggier deteriorated in Charlotte eyes, she belittled him, and her impression of him changed entirely.This also caused Charlotte to whip him, and this embarrassed him in front of the crew thus he deteriorated and weakened. He lost Charlotte, and hatred of the captain rose even higher amongst the crew. Thirdly, he chose to beat up Cranky to the point his arm had to be cut off, and this brings the crew against him. â€Å"Captain Jaggier said Mr.. Cranks laboring arm was his by rights. Miss Doyle, Mr.. Cranky has but one arm now. He was that much beaten by Captain Jaggier, who, as he said himself, took the arm. I was first surgeon, then carpent er to Mr.. Cranky,† (pig 28).This changed his life because this is what made the crew sign the round robin and come against him. Captain Jaggier experienced severe deterioration and loss of power when all the crew came against him. This was the obviously the first step of his deterioration. Captain Jaggier deteriorates and warps through the tumultuous voyage. His loss of power and authority cause him to become insane and full of wrath. His anger and extreme wrath causes him death when faced against Charlotte in a life or death situation. This comes to show that a person that is unjust and cruel will always be defeated, and will always come to an end. Our enemy is motivated by hatred and will not stop planning more plots against until they are ultimately defeated,† Timothy Murphy. â€Å"We are only falsehood, duplicity, contradiction; we both conceal and disguise ourselves from ourselves,† Blaine Pascal. Ketch, a member of the crew, was once portrayed as a fearful man with darted eyes, and turns out to be a man of great treachery, mischief, and trickery. His duplicitous nature arises as his choices and actions change his life. Firstly, Ketch decides to sign the round robin, and this causes change in his life. â€Å"As for Mr..Ketch, since he seems to prefer serving you ratter tan me†¦ ‘ place ml In ten Directorates winner Nee wall De more comforts position of second mate, thus vacated, I give to Mr.. Johnson. He at least had the dogs wit not to sign your round robin,† (pig 76-77). Ketch signed the round robin and this changed his life because he lost his position as second mate; he lost the loyalty of the captain. Secondly, Ketch hides Zachary in the brig and this changes his life. â€Å"Ketch brings me food and water every day,† he continued. The food isn't as good as what I would have prepared, but enough to keep me alive.
